When we first launched Square Reader for contactless and chip—Square’s first NFC and chip card reader—Portland was home to the most new Square Readers in the country. NFC payments were still fairly new to the U.S., so we went to Portland to help get buyers and sellers alike up to speed on this more secure (and way faster) way to pay.

We took over The Cleaners at Ace Hotel for a weekend and hosted the Payphone Pop-Up, where Portlanders could drop-in and get everything from yoga classes to almond milk cappuccinos for just two bucks, as long as they paid with their phone.

We partnered with Portland couriers and Apple Pay to make
sure it was easy to get to our pop-up. Plus, the couriers helped us get the word out by sporting cool tees/distributing cool flyers. And we encouraged all sellers to get this more secure technology by hosting workshops where they could talk to Square’s small business pros, and get free hardware.

Plus, for every reader Square Reader purchased, we’d
include $25,0000 in free processing, and a display kit—so their customers knew they could pay with their phone.
